PRESS RELEASE
The IPv6 Forum of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT in collaboration with Internet Research and the IGF secretariat will be hosting a Remote Hub at this year’s Internet Governance Forum (IGF) which is taking place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
The three-day event is to ensure participation from the Internet Community and the general public and also aimed at particularly whipping up the interest of the youth in the activities of the Internet Governance Forum. Participants are expected to register at http://www.aiti-kace.com.gh/igf and are expected to bring along their ID cards for identification.
The hubs are local meetings that take place in parallel with the IGF. People can watch the webcast together and send questions (by text or video) that will be answered by panelists in the IGF (in main sessions and workshops). In addition to that, we shall hold debates to discuss the themes of the IGF from a local perspective.
Topics to be discussed include:
1. Cybercrime in Ghana: How to tackle the menace
2. ccTLD (.gh domain names) and how to get people using them
3. The advent of International fibre optic cables in Africa: Advantages for Ghana
4. Promoting IPv6 adoption in Ghana: An important step towards bridging the digital divide
5. Broadband access: A right or a privilege for the Ghanaian?
6. Effect of social networks (eg facebook) on our productivity or otherwise
7. Local Content development and many more
This way, Ghana’s hub gains its own dynamics, and the webcast serves as a starting point for meaningful local debates. There are several advantages in creating a hub: it helps to raise awareness about Internet Governance (IG) issues, it fosters networking among participants and community building and it encourages follow-up activities.
We encourage the participation of women as a way of getting more women involved in IG issues. University students will also be invited to follow proceedings as a way of involving them in IG issues at an early stage. All confirmed participants will be notified by email.
The local event will take place at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT in Accra, near Parliament House and will start on Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th November, 2009 between 8:00am to 4:00pm each day.
